The Complete Collection of Chinese Characters Selected from Various Historical Relics has been published at the end of 2013 by Daxiang Publishing House. Prof. Liu of our center is the editor in chief and many other researchers have pitched in the edition work.

 

The editon of this book is endorsed by National Publishing Fund of 2010. It is a first major reference book collecting the original forms of characters appearing in every piece of historical relics at different periods of time while adding concrete contexts in order to present the development of the forms and lexical meanings of Chinese characters.

 

There are 15 volumes with the last volume as appendix, including the phonetic and stroke-based search system, the pictures and names of the cited relics and bibliography. The first 14 volumes, threaded by the 540 radicals listed in Shuowen Jiezi, recorded all the original forms of characters appearing in relics dating back to Pre-Qin period till Tang Dynasty. In total there are 4344 characters and 45562 different forms. The relics cited in the book are diversified and representative, including oracle bones, bronze wares, potteries, currencies, bamboo and silk strips, carved stones, residue of papers, etc. Beneath every character form is presented the name of the relic, its quotation, time and interpretation of the context where the character appears. For certain character forms which reflect the very development of itself, the editor adds a brief introduction. When all the different forms of one character are listed, the editor also add a brief summary of the change in its form and meaning. In order to render a more vivid perspective to the readers, in every volume there are about 200 colorful pictures of the relics, illustrating a large variety of writting materials from oracle bones, bronze wares to bamboo strips and silk, to stones and papers, for Chinese characters.
